The Beginning
Begin or Beginning?
I left DJ’ing in public back early in 2018. It was a decision I made after a lot of long conversations, some sleepless nights and even a quick talk with my mom. But I made the decision to leave and like that I did my last gig and sailed into sunset. That was until I felt the beginning of an awakening.
As a DJ I listen to a lot of music. And more times than not, I’ll find myself dropping into old habits. Searching the top 100 or checking what my favorite DJs are playing. While not the worst thing you can do, I always pride myself in hunting for records the old-fashioned way. Reminiscent of heading to the Lower East Side in NY and hitting up my staple record stores. Up and down the aisles, grabbing records, tossing them on the platter and dropping the needle to hear what it sounds like. I miss that. And I guess in a way that memory helped me want to get back into the saddle of DJ’ing again. Our minds are an amazing thing.
Countless club nights, hundreds of hours of practicing and sourcing records all pretty much lead to this podcast/mix show.
Fast forward to March of this year and as we all have been living it, we entered into a pandemic. And while avoiding the political rhetoric spewed by some on social media, I needed something. Even if I wanted to return to the clubs and bars, nobody is open, everyone is hunkered down. What’s a DJ to do? Oh I know, start a podcast!!
Beginning a Podcast. What Do You Know About a Podcast?
To answer that question, absolutely nothing! I’ve listened to quite a few over the years, but what do I know about putting together a podcast? But I wanted to do a podcast about house music, for my love for the genre as a whole. Deep, Tech, Melodic, Future, Electro…whatever sub-genre floats your boat, I wanted to share it. It’s what I’ve always done in my live sets. Sharing music. Laidback Luke talked about this in a keynote at Dance Fair in The Netherlands (2015) about finding your own weapon of a track. And I wanted to share a few of those alongside records a lot of folks want to listen to.
But here I am with my decks, a real microphone and some expensive software that came with Abode Cloud subscription. Back doing what I love best, playing house music! Seriously. Countless club nights, hundreds of hours of practicing and sourcing records pretty much lead to this podcast/mix show.
So, without further ado I present you with Episode 1 of the mix show. Track listing below and as always, I’m open for suggestions as this is just the beginning!
